Root Cause Mastery | 10-Session Functional Medicine Practitioner Training

From information to clinical application

You know there is more to the case. Learn how to connect the pieces.

When symptoms persist and lab results raise more questions than answers, another lecture is not enough. You need a practical way to organize the evidence, identify priorities, and decide what to explore next.

Root Cause Mastery pairs live teaching with protocols and case discussions, so you can practice applying the framework—not just collecting more information.

Learn the framework. Then work through the cases.

Explore digestion, the microbiome, nutrient status, environmental exposures, and mitochondrial function with Tom Malterre, drawing on 21 years of clinical practice.

Bring the concepts together in guided case reviews, and use your 30-minute private strategy call to discuss a challenging case, your practice goals, or applying what you have learned.

What you walk away with

Build skills you can bring back to your practice.

Identify root cause drivers behind your most complex cases instead of cycling through medications that mask the signal.
Interpret advanced functional labs with confidence. Know exactly what you're looking at and what to do about it.
Use AI tools to accelerate clinical reasoning and surface patterns you'd otherwise miss in complex cases.
Build personalized protocols that address the why behind your patient's suffering, not the label on their chart.
Communicate with patients in a way that builds trust and follow-through. When patients understand why, they do the work.

I discovered nutritional biochemistry at age 10 and never looked back. Two degrees in nutritional sciences, 21 years seeing patients, and thousands of cases later, I've figured out how to make extraordinarily complex science usable in a clinical setting.

I've served as an educator for the Institute for Functional Medicine, Thorne Research, and the Autism Research Institute. I was Director of Education at both Seeking Health and Viome. I've been teaching practitioners online for over 15 years.

What that means for you: no bloated lectures. No academic rabbit holes. Story-driven teaching that makes the complex feel intuitive and immediately applicable when your next patient walks in.

  • MS and BS in Nutrition
  • Former IFM Faculty Member and Educator
  • Author, The Elimination Diet
  • Former Educator, Thorne Research
  • Former Dir. of Education, Seeking Health

  • 21+ years clinical practice

Is this training right for you?

This is for you if:

  • You're a licensed practitioner ready to move beyond symptom management
  • You're frustrated that conventional tools aren't resolving your patients' conditions
  • You want a repeatable, evidence-based system for identifying root causes
  • You want protocols you can apply this week, not theory to file away
  • You want to become the practitioner your most complex patients have been searching for

This is not for you if:

  • You want a lecture series without case discussion or application
  • You want a passive course you can watch on 2x speed
  • You're not willing to change how you approach patient cases
  • You want a single protocol to apply to every patient

From practitioners who've trained with Tom
